Chapter Seventeen

Rob and Karin were just about ready to leave. “Come on, girls!” Rob hollered, looking at his watch.

“I’m ready.” Hope said coming out of the bedroom.

“Where’s Faith?” Karin wanted to know.

“I’m right here. I’m going to stay home. I have a little homework to do and I want to finish it before Mary and Diane get here.”

“Are you sure?” Rob asked. “You have all weekend.”

“Yeah. I get tired from staying up late on Friday, which makes me not want to do anything on Saturday. I don’t want to leave it for Sunday afternoon.” Faith explained.

“All right. We’ll be back in about an hour then.” Karin said.

Faith watched as the three of them drove away. She hated lying, but she felt it was the only way she could snoop into her mother’s cedar chest. After she was done she would do some of her homework so that she wouldn’t be completely lying.

Earlier in the day, Faith had found the key to her mother’s cedar chest. She had slipped it into her pocket waiting for this evening. On Friday nights they always had family night. Tonight the girls had invited their friends Mary and Diane to come and spend the night. Everyone else had gone to pick them up and Faith knew it was a perfect time for her to look for any secrets in the chest.

She went to her parents’ bedroom and unlocked the cedar chest. She pulled a few things off the top. Karin had folded and placed the girls old security blankets in there. Faith found school report cards and certificates that the twins had earned during their school career. Karin had kept many of the Mother’s Day presents the girls had given her. Faith smiled thinking that only the truly important artifacts from her mother’s life were in here.

Toward the bottom of the chest she found a small zipper bag that contained a lock of reddish hair. Faith assumed it was her mother’s. There was a tiny, green baby dress that looked well worn. In a special plastic holder there was an obituary. Faith read it and found out it was her grandfather’s. It was just the standard obituary stating the person’s name, how he died, their remaining relatives, and where services were to be held.

Faith sat back and sighed. She had found no useful information. There wasn’t even anything that brought about more questions. That at least would have been something. But there was absolutely nothing that gave Faith a glimpse into her mom’s past that she didn’t already know.

She carefully put everything back in the cedar chest the way she had taken it out. Then she went to go do some of her homework. At least her staying home from picking up her friends wouldn’t be a total wash. It wasn’t long before she heard them pull into the driveway and shortly after hear Hope, Diane, and Mary laughing as they barged in the front door.

Hope went directly to the radio. On their family nights, television wasn’t allowed.
